We were struck with this question when we awoke on Mustang Island the next day. We could immediately head for our ultimate destination and stop for breakfast along the way. Or we could stop and eat breakfast with waterfowl at the Leonabelle Turnbull Birding Center before heading off.
I’ll let you guess what we chose.
The Birding Center is absolutely gorgeous in the morning. Yellow-crowned and black-crowned night herons competed for space with great blue herons and great egrets, while pelicans foraged communally in the shallows. A cormorant flew in to sun itself in the early morning rays, while a harrier hawk intermittently terrorized a large group of teals, goading them into taking flight and pushing them ever closer to us.
If we didn’t have family we wanted to see and another 5 hour drive ahead of us, I might not have left. I hope that doesn’t make me a terrible person.
