Cedar Falls at Petit Jean State Park

Alternatively, this post could be titled ‘OMG WATERFALL!’ Hey, don’t judge me.

While we were casting about for things we could do while we were in Arkansas, I noticed a state park only a few minutes away from the refuge we were visiting. We decided that we had to go see the waterfall since the Other Half had never seen one before. Who knew living in an arid area meant not seeing a natural waterfall?

Holla Bend National Wildlife Refuge

On a very early, very cold morning, we packed ourselves up to head somewhere to find some wild creatures. We wound up at Holla Bend (which is the best name ever) about an hour after sunrise.

Exploring the Ouachita National Forest

One of the things we were really excited about on our trip was going through the Ouachita National Forest via the Talimena Scenic Byway. Unfortunately for us, there’s a sign at the beginning saying that the byway is closed in ‘foggy or wintry conditions.’ We thought, oh, it’s not that foggy. We’re totally good for go. Right?
